A pan-European imbalance price map — free, live, on one screen

The day-ahead price is what the market plans. The imbalance price is what reality costs. It's the price a balance-responsible party pays (or earns) for every MWh it deviates from its schedule, it swings from deeply negative to over a thousand euros within an afternoon, and it drives everything from battery dispatch to why your energy supplier cares about your smart-meter data. It is also, notoriously, scattered across a dozen national websites in a dozen formats. There has been no free pan-European live view. Now there is: the terminal's imbalance layer shows the latest system imbalance price for 18 zones on one map.
What you're looking at
Each zone is colored by its most recent published system imbalance price, from deep blue (strongly negative — the system is long, surplus energy is being dumped) through neutral to red (scarcity — being short is expensive). The tooltip discloses the exact settlement period the number belongs to, because honesty about latency is the whole game with imbalance data: publication lag ranges from one minute to weeks depending on the TSO.

The German trick: AEP-Schätzer
Germany deserves its own paragraph, because it's the market everyone asks about and the one with the strangest publication regime. The binding German imbalance price — the reBAP — is only published in quality-assured form roughly three weeks after delivery. A "live German imbalance price" therefore cannot exist… except the four German TSOs also publish the AEP-Schätzer: their own operational 15-minute estimate of what the imbalance price will settle at, updated in near-real-time on Netztransparenz. We ingest both — the estimate streams onto the map now and is replaced by the settled reBAP when it lands, with the revision history kept. You get the live view without ever mistaking an estimate for a settlement: the two carry different price types in our store and always will.
Why balancing people stare at this map
Batteries. In several markets, deliberate imbalance exposure (passive balancing — legal in NL and BE, penalized elsewhere) or fast reaction to the one-minute Belgian signal is a battery's highest-margin hour. The spread between neighboring zones' imbalance prices on this map is the case for the next merchant battery.
Renewables operators. A wind forecast error settles at the imbalance price. When the map shows −€200 across the north on a stormy Sunday, that's the cost of every over-forecast MWh made visible.
The day-ahead connection. Flip between the imbalance and price layers: persistent gaps between a zone's day-ahead and imbalance prices are the signal that intraday and balancing markets are repricing what the auction got wrong — the same signal our IDA-spread layer shows from the intraday side.
